Ciarán Walsh
objects & images // publications & projects // statement & cv

Ciarán Walsh was born in Carlow, Ireland (1980) and received an MA in 'Art in the Contemporary World' from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin (2007) and an earlier BA in 'Fine Art' from the Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dún Laoghaire (2003). Since 2003 he has exhibited at various galleries and art-spaces in Ireland and elsewhere. Additionally he has developed a number of curatorial public art commissions and self-initiated projects.
He currently lives and works in Berlin.

Walsh’s work intermixes sculpture, video, texts and photography in dynamic constellations that draw upon on a range of cultural artefacts – historical and museological sources, science fiction, and esoteric ‘outsider’ knowledge. Utilising strategies of displacement, malfunction, miscommunication and impairment, the work investigates the borderlines between subjective and observable experience. Through additionally overlaid fusions of fiction and recorded fact, the artist seeks to destabilise existing semantic and formal readings and to synthesize new perspectives and narrative possibilities. Most recently, Walsh has been concentrating upon ethnographical and historical museums as origin sites for his work, exploring spatial staging, the functions of memory, historical power narratives and the relationship dynamics of viewer and artefact.
